FINGERPRINTING MY CHILD FOR SCHOOL DINNERS!!

Today is my friend Debbie's Angel day. My mate Debs died today 1992 from the effects of ecstasy, I miss her still, 15 years on.

News on my daddy, well he has had the all clear on serious illnesses, he is still in the hospital, but hopefully he is coming home this week. so that's good news.

Now I wanted to share this, my baby girl is doing her gcse's this year and is currently on half term, she goes back in a few weeks and she is going to a new school, well not a new school as in changing schools but a whole new built school. it is very High Tec, they have a new drama and state of the art music centre, which yes is all very well and good, especially for the next set of students.

Now we got a letter from the school about school dinners, being on working family tax credit we can apply for free school meals for Kels but we haven't, so we give her £2.00 a day. So what the school are doing now is fingerprinting the kids and adding the finger print to an account and at the start of the week, we as parents have to send in a cheque for whatever amount we think is okay for our Childs school dinners for the week, I have to say have you heard anything so stupid!!! I mean come on do we really need our children fingerprinted?? sure there is  also some sort of rule under data protection that disallows this? my mind boggles, I was on free school      dinners as we were a poor family and I used to go to reception everyday with my other poverty stricken mates and we would get a silver disc and it had FREE DINNERS on it. Oh the shame! how times have changed, this though is unnecessary and I wonder who is paying for this???

Well It's Monday and as usual it is manic Monday, been trying to set up a myspace account for my clothing biz, but for some reason they won't let me have the name I want grrrrr so think I might not bother!

Well off to pour some coffee, supposed to be making some choccie fudge this afternoon and a quorn curry, but dunno if I have the time,

BYE!!

[jumps on soapbox]
I'm afraid that to an extent I support the fingerprinting of kids. It's not just about holding their personal data (which is already available to all teaching staff anyway), it's a way of monitoring their attendance properly and ensuring that what they are entitled to... they get.

Many of the new pieces of software available to schools include fingerprint readers because they are the most surefire way of ensuring that each pupil's details remain tied to them only. Schools have to destroy data of students after a certain number of years anyway, although I can't remember how long it is.

For me, it's about being able to monitor their arrival and departure from school each day - it's a safe and guaranteed way of combatting unauthorised absences, and if I were a parent and I knew my child had nothing to hide, I would be more than happy for my child to be fingerprinted if I knew it meant their safety in school was ensured. I would also only be happy if the school were prepared to adhere to, and monitored, their staff and ensured that they kept within the guidelines of the Data Protection Act.

Sorry, I've seen how teachers and staff can screw personal data up (I spent enough time fixing the databases when they'd made their mistakes) and anything that makes life easier is a godsend for all involved.

But hey, I don't work in a school any more, so maybe in time my opinions will change

okay curry was yum and the fudge is still chilling, never made it before

in reply to the fingerprinting, indie think it is only for school dinners, it has nothing to do with attendence, you are right about *wagging off* issues but I have never had any problems with either of my kids on that score, suppose I am jsut lucky in that sense. no need to be sorry for your opinion honey :) I enjoyed reading it  (hugz)

as someone who still works in schools i'll disagree with zoe [i know she won't mind!].  fingerprinting kids is something that shouldn't be done without permission from parents, and if not having their fingerprints taken down infringes on their rights to free meals, or indeed any meals at all, then it's something that could probably make sensational tabloid news!

i had free school dinners too ... and i never had a problem despite the lack of fingerprints .
